Coasting Heating and Cooling knows that heating and air conditioning systems can be complicated and confusting to our clients. We have prepared this list of the more common questions that our North Florida clients ask us..

Q. When should I replace my air filter?
A. Check it at least once a month, around the time you receive your electric bill.

Q. What temperature should I keep my thermostat to conserve energy?
A. To conserve energy set thermostat at 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer.

Q. It’s winter and when I look at my unit, steam or smoke is coming off, is that normal?
A. Yes. Don’t be alarmed because your condensing unit is going through its defrost cycle.

Q. Should I have my unit checked periodically?
A. We recommend homeowners signing up on a preventative maintenance program. It will prolong the useful life of your air conditioning system and prevent major problems and the associated expenses.

Q. My air handler is located in the attic and I have had water leaks that caused considerable damage. Is there any way to prevent this?
A. Yes. You can have a float switch installed. It is designed to shut down the unit before the drain pan overflows.

Q. What is something I can check if my unit is not coming on?
A. Sometimes it is simple as resetting the breaker and thermostat. Turn the thermostat to off, then back to desired mode (heat/cool).

Q, Should I add bleach to my drain line?
A. If you have a T stack in the drain line, we recommend you add a cup full at every filter change.

Q. I’m just not getting a lot of airflow in one room, why?
A. Check the ductwork for air leaks or crushed ducts.
